Close-up Time!

Hi!

Poppy and Fern are ready for their close-ups!

Poppy!!!! I accidentally picked her up when she had food in her mouth. This resulted in a glare from the rat and a fabulous photo on my part.

Fern!!!!!! Really nice pic, right? My little rascal;)

Thanks,

YAY! FUN FOR ALL!

Hiya!

The rats got some new stuff a few days ago...as they had managed to successfully demolish most of their old stuff...and they were HORRIBLY bored. Their Royal Highness's were presented with...

a red and green striped crinkle tunnel with soft fuzz on the inside (very fun!)
A new little hut...and in PURPLE (the best color ever!)
Two little cardboard trees for chewing on...
Wooden mistletoe! (WONDERFUL!)
And a hanging wooden thing with a bell on the end (mommy will NEVER sleep again!)

they love their new stuff and they spent the whole day after I got it running around and never stopping! They would like to show you some pics (sorry for the bad photography...)

MISTLETOE!!!! Ok...they LOVE this...been sniffing at it and I caught them bumping noses under it...
                                  Crinkle tunnel!!! Bad photo...but yeah:)
                                            One of the cardboard trees!
                                            HUT!
Oh, I forgot to mention I gave them a rock...
                                        The Ringing NO-SLEEP-FOR-ANYONE machine!

Did I forget to mention it SNOWED in the rat cage...well, the snow was purple and it was actually bedding...but that is still a rare treat!
And here is dear little Fern! I caught this photo mid-yawn, so it looks like she's screaming or something. She also looks a bit ruffled cause she was sleeping and Poppy woke her up by stepping on her head.
                                           Poppy...sweet little Poppy:)
Thanks,

Ratties say Hello!

Hey Everyone!

Poppy, Fern and I decided to take a few photos today. I got some pretty good ones, since the rats seem to be IN LOVE WITH THE CAMERA! I'm not sure if GRABBING and HUGGING and LEAPING at the camera is "normal" rat behavior, but it seems to be my rat's behavior. Poppy tried to grab it and take it from me, Fern tried to jump out of her cage and take it. Oh...goodness...what am I to do with the little rascals? Anyway...PHOTOS!

Hey there! This is a great pic of the two of them!
                                               Fern!!!!! Such a sweetie!
Poppy! Got VERY CLOSE to the camera VERY QUICKLY as I took the pic, she seemed to have evil ideas in mind. But you can see her face at least:)
Another good Poppy one...and my hand looking really distorted in the corner...yeah.
Rememberance shot! One of the first pics I took of the TINY LITTLE BABIES! OH MY GOSH...they were so small...look at how big they've grown!
                                         Twisted Limbo Photo! Yay!
Sooo...that is the Ratty Batty fun! Yay!

Fern's Advice...

Hiya Friends!

I am sure you've missed me, as I haven't blogged in a while (and neither has mommy.) I've been good...but of course Poppy still walks all over me and acts like an arrogant snot...and I still love her for it. You are probably getting bored of her posts on her stupid evil "schemes" and "plans" which work...but only if you obey her. Just so you know...I can be naughty too...but I'm usually the one to just hang around and be content. If you'd like some friendly advice from your favorite rat...I'm always here! Here are some nice little tips if you want to let someone appear to be in charge...but you really rein:

#1: Just ignore them...like when Poppy steals my food and steps on me...I just pretend she doesn't exist! It works wonders!
#2: Always be friendly...and less devious then the subject (in this case, Poppy.) If you are an innocent little flower all the time, mommy will scold your sister and you can happily grin nicely.
#3: Show your strength every once and a while. I let Poppy do what she wants, but once and a while I take my food back when she steals it and tackle her to the ground. She needs to know I'm not helpless.
#4: Eat lots of treats, take naps, play with your toys, drink a lot and be awesome.

I'm glad I could be of service!

Fern (or Ferny-Werny/Little Rascal)

Poppy's #1 Rule

This is Poppy speaking! I would like you to know that I have rules, standards and stuff that needs to be obeyed. But my #1 rule is...

ALWAYS BE SNEAKY!

If you are not sneaky...then life is a miserable wasteland of un-sneaky people. In order to be sneaky...I have a set of guidelines that will help you achieve worldy sneakiness.

#1: Be Adorable. This comes natural to me, as I have huge eyes and very nice little facial expressions that make it impossible to ignore my innocence (accept when you happen to be a annoying mommy with too many rules...like DON'T PEE ON PEOPLE and NO RUNNING UNDER THE BED and DON'T STEAL YOUR SISTERS FOOD!)
#2: Be in Charge. If you can't maintain a strong leadership position...you are in no state to sneak around and be awesome.
#3: Blame it on your sister. If discovered in your acts of devious epicness...go the the standard back-up explanation and BLAME IT ON FERN!
#4: Aquire Henchmen. If you have others to execute your evil plans...then if they are caught...it will seem like it's them doing the naughty thing...not you.
#5: Have a Big Brain. If you don't have one...then I'm sorry to say you can't be a devious evil sneaky rat (or dog, human, cat, horse, alien, other small creature.)
#6: Act Fautless. I am already faultless...it isn't an act. But if you don't have my great fortune...just wing it.
#7: Obey Me. I always know what to do. Listen to me or else.

Thank you for reading! I'm so glad I could be of help to your evil schemes.

Outside in the fresh air...

Today I took Miss Poppy outside on my shoulder. She sat there for like 5 minutes with the wind blowing in her fur, sniffing the air curiously. She had such a genuine look of wonder on her little face. I laughed and stroked her head. I'll take Fern out tomorrow maybe...she was asleep when I took her sister. I think i'll have to start doing it more often, as everyone needs a bit of fresh air sometimes...to clear their head and make them feel calm.

Have a lovely fall with plenty of fresh air,

NutFreeG, Poppy and Fern:)

Fun in the water!

The girls had fun in the water a few days ago! I filled a little dish with water, put some peas in for the babies to catch and added rats. Fern of course LOVED IT! Poppy thought the water sucked, and kept stealing Fern's peas as soon as her sister exited the water. She is such a naughty little thing isn't she?
Anyway, you are probably hoping for some pictures aren't you? Well, I am happy to say that your thirst WILL be satisfied. Here they are! The Amazing Water Rats! (uh..rat...)

Poppy actually decided to try getting in...at least stretching in...
Poppy is off to the side...eating a pea she stole from her sister.
                                             Fern is fishing:)
                                              FERN WERN!
Sorry, I didn't get any pictures where Fern was all the way in the water, I couldn't grab my camera and get it positioned right while she was still in.

Thanks,

NutFreeG, Poppy and Fern:)

Poppy in a box house...

Hi!

Today Poppy explored a little box house I had made for something a while back. She loved it. I am considering making her one. If it goes well I will post it in a recipe for rat fun. Here are some pics!
                                            Sniffing....
                                        "Oooh! Isn't this fun?"
                                            "What's up there?"
                                           Poppy being Poppy...
                                         "Let's burrow under here!"
"I am being sneaky! Go away!"
                                                                          Thanks,

A word from the rats: Poppy

Hi, I'm Poppy also known as Poppy Seed. If you have read this blog, you know I am a shy little black rat with a sweet personality. You also know I have a hyper sister named Fern. She is the best sister ever! Even though I am the quiet one, I am also the one in charge. I am the Alpha! The supreme leader of the pack! I keep my sister and my mommy in line. I also steal Fern's food once and a while, just for fun. Fern knows I am the boss, but she doesn't really seem to care all that much. She just goes on being happy and bouncy about everything. Fern and I like to play ALL DAY! We have play fights and we jump around. Fern is scared of the wheel Mommy bought us. I think it's kind of creepy, but I will go close to it. I actually have my food stash behind it! When we were smaller, Fern and I could sleep curled up together in the little blue bed we have, now only one of us fits in at a time. I like eating in there. The other day, Mommy took LOTS of pictures of me while Fern was sleeping. I kept posing, I LOVE the spotlight, because even though I'm in charge, Fern often steals it. I love climbing on Mommy, but sometimes I try to launch myself off her onto the floor...Mommy says I could get hurt, but I just think its FUN!  Mommy also has a Dog, he is very big, he doesn't scare me though! I think he might want to eat us, but he also might want to play with us. But Mommy says that he won't hurt us. I kind of wish I could get up close and sniff him. He seems very interesting. I've never been close to a dog before. But maybe some day. Anyway, bye bye!

A word for Fern...

Hi! I'm Fern! If you have read this blog, then your probably already know a little bit about me. But I'm here to fill in some very important facts and tell you what I have done today so far:) Here is the basics about me!

Name: Fern!!!!!!!!!
Age: 3 months!
Favorite treat: Cheerios and coconut chips.
Favorite Fruit/Veggie: Peas! Frozen, normal or dried!
Favorite pastimes: jumping, playing, sleeping, eating and making a huge mess!!!!!!

That was the basics! I just love making a mess! Right after Mommy cleans the cage, me and my sister Poppy spill the food, go to the bathroom everywhere and and make sure it looks highly dirty! Because who likes a clean cage? It's so boring! Anyway, here is what I did today:

Well, first, when mommy woke up, I was given a good morning kiss, and I licked her finger! It was TASTY! Then when she left, I jumped around for a little bit. Then I took a nap, drank a LOT of water and ate some food. She still hasn't given me any treats yet though:( Then while she held Poppy, I groomed myself, my cage is a mess, but I'm not! So far, my day has been pretty boring, but later I will get to have a run around and probably get a special new treat! Here is another thing about me: I REFUSE to use the very expensive wheel Mommy bought just for me and Poppy. Poppy will climb on it and sniff it, but I won't go anywhere near it. I think its some kind of trap that is very scary! But, anyway!!! Bye for now!

Fern the awesome rat of awesomeness!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

                                          They must explore!
                                           Curious Poppy...
                                          "SO THIRSTY!"
*narrows eyes* "I'm eating here! Go away!"
Uh...Poppy's hands as she trys to grab the camera...

Recipe for Rat Fun: Treat ropes!

Hi!

A few weeks ago a decided to try hiding treats in crumbled up pieces of paper, tying them to a rope and hanging them from the top of the cage, seeing if Poppy and Fern could get them out. It took a while at first, but they soon got the idea, then it became the next best thing! The go crazy for the treat ropes now! Want to try? Here's how:

Supplies:

String of some kind.
A small handful of your rats favorite treats.
Plain printer paper.

Instructions:
Tear a piece of paper large enough to hold a handful of treats and still have room to crumple up tight. Fill with treats. Crumple up tight, with maybe a tiny edge of paper sticking out. Tie a long piece of string around. Tie to the top of the cage so that it hangs down far enough for the rats to reach. Watch them play and have loads of fun!

Here are some pictures:

                                        Preparing...
                                          Noticing...
                                         Trying to get open...
                                           Trying harder...
AAAAH! RAT GONE CRAZY WITH NEED TO GET OPEN!
                                          Finding prizes!
The shell of empty paper after the rats are done...
What it should look like before...
                                                     Thanks,
