A word for Fern...

Hi! I'm Fern! If you have read this blog, then your probably already know a little bit about me. But I'm here to fill in some very important facts and tell you what I have done today so far:) Here is the basics about me!

Name: Fern!!!!!!!!!
Age: 3 months!
Favorite treat: Cheerios and coconut chips.
Favorite Fruit/Veggie: Peas! Frozen, normal or dried!
Favorite pastimes: jumping, playing, sleeping, eating and making a huge mess!!!!!!

That was the basics! I just love making a mess! Right after Mommy cleans the cage, me and my sister Poppy spill the food, go to the bathroom everywhere and and make sure it looks highly dirty! Because who likes a clean cage? It's so boring! Anyway, here is what I did today:

Well, first, when mommy woke up, I was given a good morning kiss, and I licked her finger! It was TASTY! Then when she left, I jumped around for a little bit. Then I took a nap, drank a LOT of water and ate some food. She still hasn't given me any treats yet though:( Then while she held Poppy, I groomed myself, my cage is a mess, but I'm not! So far, my day has been pretty boring, but later I will get to have a run around and probably get a special new treat! Here is another thing about me: I REFUSE to use the very expensive wheel Mommy bought just for me and Poppy. Poppy will climb on it and sniff it, but I won't go anywhere near it. I think its some kind of trap that is very scary! But, anyway!!! Bye for now!

Fern the awesome rat of awesomeness!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Recipe for Rat Fun: Treat ropes!

Hi!

A few weeks ago a decided to try hiding treats in crumbled up pieces of paper, tying them to a rope and hanging them from the top of the cage, seeing if Poppy and Fern could get them out. It took a while at first, but they soon got the idea, then it became the next best thing! The go crazy for the treat ropes now! Want to try? Here's how:

Supplies:

String of some kind.
A small handful of your rats favorite treats.
Plain printer paper.

Instructions:
Tear a piece of paper large enough to hold a handful of treats and still have room to crumple up tight. Fill with treats. Crumple up tight, with maybe a tiny edge of paper sticking out. Tie a long piece of string around. Tie to the top of the cage so that it hangs down far enough for the rats to reach. Watch them play and have loads of fun!

Here are some pictures:

                                        Preparing...
                                          Noticing...
                                         Trying to get open...
                                           Trying harder...
AAAAH! RAT GONE CRAZY WITH NEED TO GET OPEN!
                                          Finding prizes!
The shell of empty paper after the rats are done...
What it should look like before...

First Run-Around

Poppy and Fern had a delightful first time running around a room, we used the bathroom, since it was small and there wasn't very many places they could hide or escape. At first, as expected, they were very cautious, sticking to me and their travel cage, but then they got curious and started exploring things. Earlier, I had made them a sort of box hideout for when they run around, they didn't go in it very much, but I suspect it will grow on them (especially if I continue to leave little treats in there.) They are getting bigger by the second it seems. I went on holiday for a week, leaving them with my friend, and when I get back it seems like magic, they have both gotten rid of their baby fuzz and now had sleek adult coats. Fern, who was smaller, has gone through a growth spurt, and now is the same size as her sister. They love people, climbing all over anyone who holds them, and basically acting like mini dogs. My own dog still licks his lips when he sees the cage though....hmmmmm.
Well...now some pictures: If you look closely, you can see Poppy climbing down my back, I didn't really get very good pictures of Poppy, accept for this one, which is adorable and funny.

                                        Fern, being Fern.

I didn't get very good pictures of any of them, they are mostly blury, but anyway....
Fern again, Poppy was moving to fast to get many pictures.
VERY blury picture of Poppy exploring.
Poppy, sticking her head in the box fort to find treats.
                                             Poppy....
                                         Blurry picture of...Fern I think.

Thanks,
Until next time.

Getting bigger...

I am very pleased to say that Fern and Poppy (especially Poppy) are getting much bigger, it seems like they have grown overnight:) Their tails are getting thicker too. They are always running around and playing. Poppy pulls her sisters ears though, and I am not sure how to get her to stop. I have made them a hammock out of an old hoodie hood and they love it.
Anyway, until next time!
